An Interlaboratory Study is proposed for the gas chromatography (GC) method for determining volatile compounds in wine, spirits of wine origin and other alcoholic beverages (OENO-SCMA 24-756 Et5_2026).

The method OENO-SCMA 24-756 uses reference substance ethanol as IS (method EIS) in calculations of RRF and congener concentrations, that is differ from the methods with traditional IS (methods TIS).

Distinguishing Features of the Method:

  • When the use the method EIS, there is no need to add into samples any further special compound IS as in methods TIS.
  • When analysing alcoholic beverage samples using this method, there is no need to measure the strength and density of the beverage test samples.
  • The results are expressed in units of g/100 L AA.
  • Chromatograph is calibrated using standard solutions of the volatile compounds being determined, in which the compound content is expressed in g/100 L of AA.
  • The method includes quality control measures that allow the user to select the chromatographic system and the most appropriate sample analysis conditions.
  • This method is suitable for the determination of the following compounds by gas chromatography in spirit drinks and wine: ethanal (acetaldehyde), ethyl ethanoate (ethyl acetate), 1,1-diethoxyethane (acetal), methanol (methyl alcohol), butan-2-ol (sec-butanol), propan-1-ol (n-propanol), 2-methylpropan-1-ol (isobutyl alcohol), butan-1-ol (n-butanol), 2-methylbutan-1-ol (active amyl alcohol), 3-methylbutan-1-ol (isoamyl alcohol) with analyte content ranging from 5 to 1500 g per 100 L anhydrous ethanol (g/100 L AA).
